Corcept Therapeutics wants to help people who are beyond blue. The biotechnology firm is exploring treatments that regulate the presence of cortisol, a steroid hormone associated with some psychiatric and metabolic disorders. Its sole commercial product, Korlym, is a version of the compound mifepristone (commonly known as RU-486 or the "abortion pill") used to regulate release patterns of cortisol. The drug is approved in the US for use in patients with Cushing's Syndrome, a metabolic disorder caused by high levels of cortisol in the blood. The company is also developing mifepristone for treatment of patients with psychotic depression.
